With typhoons and severe weather continuing to interrupt business activity across the country, Philippine employers are being encouraged to look beyond physical recovery plans and prepare their workforce systems for changing conditions. AscentHR, a provider of HR technology, payroll, compliance, and workforce solutions, is urging businesses to modernize workforce management so they can respond to disruptions while keeping employee compensation accurate and transparent.

The call follows Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) data showing that average weekly hours worked fell from 40.6 hours in July to 39.2 hours in August 2026. The PSA identified bad weather as a major reason employed Filipinos worked fewer hours. For employees, reduced hours can affect take-home pay; for employers, sudden schedule changes add complexity to shift management, overtime calculations, and statutory reporting.
Although unemployment eased to 5.3% in August, underemployment remained at 11.9%, or about 5.9 million employed Filipinos seeking additional hours or another source of income. These pressures can be felt particularly in manufacturing, retail, logistics, and other operations that depend on shifts or multiple sites. The International Labour Organization has highlighted how heat stress and extreme weather contribute to lost working hours across tropical climate zones.
“Operational resilience isn’t just about disaster recovery, but it’s about having payroll and workforce technology agile enough to accommodate weather disruptions and seasonal hours without administrative drag,” said Subramanyam Sreenivasaiah, Founder and CEO of AscentHR. He said automated shift tracking, flexible variable-pay tools, and real-time compliance safeguards can help businesses adjust schedules while ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time.
With fourth-quarter seasonal hiring approaching alongside continuing weather contingencies, AscentHR advises employers to review whether their HR technology can support flexibility, local compliance, and timely workforce data. AscentHR provides solutions including PowerPay and StoHRM, combining automation, cloud analytics, and localized compliance features to help organizations manage workforce changes while protecting data security and employee trust.
